Stefan Urosh I

Stefan Urosh I
King of Serbia (q.v.) from 1243-1276. In 1258 he joined with Manfred of Sicily (qq.v.) and Michael II Komnenos Doukas of the Despotate of Epiros (qq.v.) to oppose the expansion of the Empire of Nicaea (q.v.). He was defeated in 1259 by Michael VIII Palaiologos at the battle of Pelagonia (qq.v). Subsequent negotiations to marry his son Stefan Urosh (II) Milutin (q.v.) to Anna, daughter of Michael VIII, failed in 1272.
